How much does a celebrant cost?

In Victoria a celebrant typically will cost between 3-5% of the average Australian wedding budget. Depending on your date and location, a celebrant may charge anything between $850 and $3,000. When choosing the celebrant that’s right for you, consider cost versus value. Celebrants are a bit like airlines. Cheap flights can be great, but when they don’t turn up or something goes wrong you’re on your own. Or you can pay a little more and take the safer, more enjoyable, stress free option that prioritises customer service.

How much does Naomi charge?

All ceremonies are different and my pricing policy reflects this. I don’t charge a flat fee per service. Instead, I will tailor a quote specifically for the ceremony you want so you only pay for what you get. Want to get married in the middle of winter? On a Monday? At 5pm on a Saturday in peak wedding season?  Or at 11am on a Thursday morning? Getting married offshore? Up a mountain? In Broome?
All of this can be accommodated and the price will be determined based on your needs.

What legal elements have to be included in a wedding ceremony?

There are five things that must occur during a wedding ceremony for the marriage to be legally solemnised;
1. The celebrant must introduce themselves
2. Your names must be said in full at least once during the ceremony (yes, even your embarrassing middle name).
3. The celebrant must say ‘The Monitum’ from the Marriage Act (1961)
4. You must exchange legal vows as a minimum. These must be said by you, out loud and they are ‘I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, John Jake Doe, take thee, Jane Jill Smith, to be my lawful wedded wife (or spouse, or partner in marriage).’
and vice versa.
5. Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present and see and hear the ceremony and sign the relevant legal documentation.

What is the Monitum?

The Monitum is an excerpt from the Marriage Act (1961) that must be read before you take your marriage vows and reads;
I am duly authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to law. Before you are joined in marriage in my presence and in the presence of these witnesses, I am to remind you of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter. Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.

How long does our ceremony have to go for?

A simple personally written wedding ceremony that consists essentially of your story and you vows typically runs for around 20 minutes from beginning to end.  Adding a few readings or a ritual will bring it closer to the 30 minute mark.

Whilst a Paperwork Only Marriage that only includes the legal elements mandated can be completed in under 5 minutes.

Ultimately the length is up to the couple to determine, but Naomi doesn’t recommend having a ceremony that runs for more than 30 minutes as a maximum.

Can a friend or family member deliver my ceremony?

The short answer is yes, if they work with an Authorised Celebrant who will complete the legally required elements.
Naomi is happy to work with a third party to deliver your wedding your way. But, as the authorised celebrant, she will be responsible for the legality of the ceremony. Please get in touch for more information.

What will Naomi wear on the day?

I like to keep things pared back and simple. I usually wear black or other muted tones like olive, navy or rust and I don’t do garish brights or loud prints.

If you have a specific request – or costume! – you would like me to wear just ask.

How much does a celebrant cost?

More than your shoes, less than your dress or suit.

Weddings, like people, are all different.

I don’t do cookie cutter ceremonies or cookie cutter prices.
